I'm having so much fun reading your blog!

We too skipped the PC at our Dr's recommendation. He knows we are selectively vaxing, and said this is one people with our concerns skip. I too will be BFing until at least 2.

BTW, my DD just got over RSV - her first illness and it was miserable (but we were able to treat at home). She has never been in any kind of group childcare and is 10 mos. I thought I was being careful, but it just goes to show that RSV an be caught anywhere (in adults it acts like the common cold).

Andi, This is an important decision and IMO, I don't think you should do what Beth suggests, but instead, do the research on both sides of this controversial topic. After all, things become controversial for a reason, and that is because both sides have valid points. There are many sites dedicated to informing you about the side effects and possible dangers of vaccinations. And, of course, for the pro side, you can always go to the Center for Disease Control site or others like it. I think the odds of having a very serious reaction to vaccinations are not reported accurately, because in studies they have found that most doctors don't report them. It's very hard to even get a doctor to admit a reaction is from a vaccine, because at this point in time, science is very much motivated by fear of diseases, whether it's realistic or not. But, even if you believe that serious reactions to the vax ARE rare, when you compare those numbers to the numbers of cases where there are serious reactions to the actual diseases, make you sure you find a site that will let you know the percentage of serious problems with the diseases HERE, in the US. Usually the statistics for the deaths and serious effects of the diseases do not tell you that most of the problems are in underdeveloped countries with poor nutrition and health care, or with children who have a compromised immune system. The truth is, you are taking a risk either way. I, personally, choose to bolster my son's God-given immune system as much as possible with good nutritious food, little or no processed food, and I also did breastfeed until he was two and a half. He goes to preschool 3 days a week, plays on a soccer team and takes ballet, as well as church nursery, and plays closely with kids at the playground, and he gets sick with a cold maybe once or twice a year, if that. And, it's always mild. As yet, he's had none of the dreaded childhood diseases, even though there was an outbreak at his preschool last year (only vaxed kids got it, go figure), but I am sure if he does get one, his immune system will handle it well. We're in a long period in science where it's believed that pumping our kids full of toxins, drugs, and chemicals is better than fostering a healthy immune system with good nutrition, sleep, sunshine, and exercise, and then trusting IT to keep them healthy. They now refer to even chicken pox, and measles as "killer diseases," yet when I was a kid, everyone got these diseases, stayed home from school for a week or so, and got on with their lives. They then had natural, lifelong immunity--no booster necessary. And, back then, kids didn't constantly have colds and ear infections, and rarely did you meet one with allergies, asthma, ADD or any of the things that are now just accepted as part of being a kid. And when someone tells you that since the wide use of vaccines, the numbers for the diseases have dropped dramatically. Do some searches to verify this and you will see charts, made with info. taken directly from the CDC's numbers, that clearly shows that most of these diseases had dropped dramatically BEFORE the use of the vaccine. This was due to increased sanitation and better nutrition. You won't find this info. presented clearly on any mainstream medical sites or government sites, like the CDC, because of the prevailing fear of these mostly natural, harmless diseases becoming epidemics. The rates of these diseases will naturally ebb and flow. Some vaccinations have been proven to cause the very illness they're meant to prevent. And, in response to that, they'll tell you "yes, but it's a milder version." They always have an answer. Bottom line, as I said, there are risks on both sides, so you can choose to buy into the fear mentality and try to keep your child from ever experiencing one of these childhood illnesses or you can put only good, healthy things into your child and trust his body to handle them as it's designed to do. I'm in a homeschooling group, and I know people whose whole family have had pertussis and other "killer" diseases, and handled it just fine. Get the book "How to Raise A Healthy Child In Spite of Your Doctor," by Dr. Robert Mendelsohn. He was a pediatrician for 30 years, and in addition to a lot of other good advice, he discusses each vaccination and disease and the risk with each in no nonsense terms. Just some things to think about. But, above all else, do the research yourself, and then FOLLOW YOUR INSTINCTS.

THank you for your post-- my 16 month old has had seizures (hasn't had one in 10 months though) but this made me SO hesitant to vax. I felt completely forced into Prevnar-- when I mentioned the seizure thing the pediatrician didn't even know it occurred more in babies with a seizure history. She just was so adamant that we get it because she said Pc disease can kill your child. Ugh. Thankfully the vaccination didn't cause any further seziures. So now I have a question-- we haven't gotten MMR yet (skipped it at her 1 year appt, then she was sick at her 15 month appt). We are going to Sweden and the doc once again is adamant that my daughter get the MMR before we leave. I still breastfeed. Thoughts?

Because i was so allergic to the DPT as a child, they split up the dosages. So instead of 4 shots, i had 12. Turns out, it didn't immunize me for sh** while i went to daycare each day. But who knew... So i am not going to get the Pc for my one year old, breastfed, stay at home baby, who does not go to church group, as it has the toxin base of the diphtheria shot.

He didn't get his first cold until he was 10mo.

I do believe in vaccinations for the MMR, polio, chickenpox, but will wait until the time is right.

I don't believe in giving shots to babies who are not walking, who have to sit with a lump in their thigh muscle.

Children don't even know how to "play" together until they are 2... this is ridiculous! Have you studied human sociology to be making such claims about the health of social interactions for a less than 2 year old?

Not exclusive breast feeding. I wouldn't deny the baby the desire to try foods. We are at 14 mo and still at it for nap-times and bedtime.

There are several vaccinations administered to babies which would place them at risk of contracting particular types of diseases. Know about childhood vaccinations. Get more information about Vaccinations and child vaccinations at Parenting Advisor. ( http://www.parentingadvisor.net )

I don't have children but the more I learn about vaccinations and from my basic understanding of germ theory I will not be vacciating my children or myself during pregnancy. I AGREE 100% with the commenter above, I have always had the belief that no good can come injecting a healthy baby with a concoction of a disease strain, neurotoxins and other poisonous preservatives. I think that people need to start changing their ideas of what parenting and childhood is all about. We have been thought to lead these crazy busy lives, where we can have whatever we want whenever we want. In my practical experience within a large family and academic and professional experience within the preschool classroom, children just need us to slow down. They need time to adjust and explore the world

I'm responding to an old post (Jenny from 5/8/09), but I think it's important. YES - vaccinated children can carry diseases and pass it on to vaccinated children. I think it's funny that parents of vaxed kids are so scared of unvaxed kids, when their kids are the ones supposedly protected by the vaccines they've had! And vaxed kids -- like any human being -- can always carry a virus or bacteria and just not become symptomatic or sick. There has been a good deal of press lately about an outbreak of pertusis in southern California -- turns out that most of the kids that got the disease were vaccinated -- so much for the effectiveness of these vaccines!
